How to Care for Lawn, Chiffon, and Silk: Fabric Care Tips from Kashif Fabrics
The wrong washing habit destroys a suit in one cycle.
Lawn (the easiest)
- Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, or hand wash embroidered pieces.
- Turn prints inside out.
- Dry in shade. Sunlight fades prints fast.
- Iron on medium heat while slightly damp.
Chiffon
- Hand wash only, cold, with mild detergent.
- Never wring. Press the water out with a towel.
- Hang dry away from the sun.
- Iron low with a cloth barrier, or steam.
- Store hanging, not folded.
Silk (the diva)
- Dry cleaning is strongly recommended.
- If washing at home, use cold water and a silk-specific detergent, with no rubbing.
- Never bleach or tumble dry.
- Iron low and inside out, or steam.
- Store in a cotton bag, never plastic. Silk breathes.
Embellished suits
- Never soak.
- Wash inside out in a laundry bag.
- Air dry flat so the weight of wet embroidery does not tear the fabric.
- Store with muslin or tissue between folds.
Seasonal storage
Wash everything before storing, since dust and body oils attract insects and yellow fabric. Fold or hang formal wear in breathable covers in a dry place.
